Karthi gears up for his D-day

Ever since Karthi’s wedding with the Erode-based Rajini was announced, there has been a flurry of activity that has been quietly executed in the Sivakumar household — everybody right from the groom’s brother Suriya and niece Diya have been closely involved in the preparations.
On Tuesday evening several people in the city were pleasantly surprised to receive a green and gold elegant box at their doorstep, the actor’s wedding invite signalled the scale of celebrations that are yet to unfold. This innovative creation is said to be the bride and groom’s brainchild along with a little help from the family. According to close sources, the couple wanted something simple yet classy which also had traditional touches to it. Since the manjal pathrikai is a common feature at Tamilian weddings, the couple opted for a dull gold card for their wedding. For the more informal wedding reception that is planned in Chennai, they went in for a mehendi green with a gold sheen since the green symbolises auspiciousness at weddings. The stencil cutwork on the cards was used to give it a light Mughal/royal touch. One hears that Karthi and Ranjini both wanted a simple wedding invite, however since this is the most expected wedding in the family (Karthi being the youngest sibling) Sivakumar and Suriya wanted to ensure that every invitee receives a box of sweets too. This is where practicality seeped in and after much brainstorming the families decided to come up with a design that could incorporate the sweets and the cards together. The dry fruit chikki was made by a prominent sweet shop in Chennai and ingredients like pure rose essence, imported dry fruits and Kashmiri saffron was used to lend this an eclectic touch.
Since the wedding is slated to be a traditional affair, the entire family is planning to flaunt the best of silks and it is learnt that Karthi’s mother Lakshmi, sister Brindha and sister-in-law Jyotika have made frequent trips to well-known saree shops in the city to shop for the big day. Even lil’ Diya has got a custom-made pattu pavadai set for her uncle’s wedding! Apparently the bride’s family has also been to Kanchipuram to select and customise weaves for Ranjini’s big day. The jewellery has been made by the traditional family jeweller. However, things are a little different for the reception at a star hotel in the city. One hears that Sivakumar and his family were keen on the same venue where Suriya tied the knot with Jyotika ten years ago, but they also felt that they needed a bigger space that could accomodate well-wishers from the industry, who are expected to turn up in large numbers for the Chennai reception. Since both Karthi and Ranjini are said to be fond of instrumental music, prominent veena artiste Revathi Krishna has been invited to perform at the reception. Since Karthi’s cousin Gnanavel Raja’s wife is a jewellery designer, sources say that she has helped the bride put together a stunning ensemble, sourced from Mumbai and Kolkata, for the reception on July 7.
